Mother’s Day is often marked by flowers, messages, and celebration. Yet behind these expressions of love lie deeper, untold stories of sacrifice, resilience, and quiet strength that too often go unseen.

On 10th May 2026, Reach A Hand Africa invites you to a powerful and intimate film experience—the premiere of Maama Wange (My Mother), a story that gives voice to these lived realities and creates space for reflection, recognition, and connection.

This is more than a film screening. It is a thoughtfully curated gathering that places storytelling at the center of empathy and understanding, especially for young mothers who continue to show up for their families and communities despite adversity.

About the Film

Maama Wange (My Mother) was developed under the iKON Fellowship Programme, an initiative dedicated to nurturing bold, authentic Ugandan storytelling and equipping emerging filmmakers with the tools to tell stories that matter.

The project was first brought to life as a short film, an intimate yet powerful creative exploration that quickly resonated with audiences across different spaces. Its emotional depth and authenticity led to significant international recognition, including Best Film at the Black Cat International Film Festival, alongside nominations and official selections in Nigeria, France, South Africa, and India.

These milestones affirmed the strength and universality of the story. What began as a short film rooted in local realities revealed a much larger narrative one that demanded more space, depth, and exploration.

As a result, Maama Wange has since evolved into a full-length feature film, expanding its storytelling to more deeply capture the complexity of motherhood, resilience, and survival. This transition marks not just a growth in format, but a deepening of the story’s emotional and social impact.

At the heart of the film is Atim, a young mother navigating loss, uncertainty, and the weight of her circumstances. Her journey reflects persistence, courage, and an unwavering commitment to care and continue despite the odds.

While Atim’s story is fictional, it mirrors the lived realities of many young mothers across Uganda and the world, women whose strength often goes unseen, whose challenges are rarely centered, yet whose resilience sustains families and shapes futures every day.

The premiere of the feature film, therefore, is more than a cinematic milestone. It is the culmination of a journey from a single story to a broader, more layered narrative and an opportunity to bring these lived experiences to the forefront. It creates space for recognition, sparks meaningful conversation and encourages collective empathy and support for young mothers within our communities.

Why Mothers Day?

Motherhood is not one story, it is many.

While Mother’s Day is often celebratory, it also carries layered emotions for many women. Some are navigating hardship, others healing, and many striving to be seen and supported.

This premiere intentionally takes place on Mother’s Day to move beyond surface celebration and create space for truth, acknowledgement, and empathy, honouring motherhood in all its complexity: raw, resilient, and real.
